Go-kart handling, fully electric

The Mini Cooper SE (Level 3) puts Mini’s famous handling into a fully electric hatchback. Daily commuter, executive runabout or second family car: it fills all three roles.

One question stops most buyers: is a 32.6 kWh battery big enough? Short answer: for typical Barbados driving, yes.

Island range: why 160–190 km covers your week

Overseas reviewers knock the Mini’s range because they test at 120 km/h on cold motorways. Barbados is different.

With the A/C running on a 31°C afternoon, a reasonable island estimate is around 160–190 km per charge. That is often 4–6 days of typical commuting, such as Warrens to Christ Church and back, before you plug in.

  • Average traffic speeds sit around 35–50 km/h.
  • Regenerative braking recovers energy at junctions and on downhill slopes.
  • The whole island is only about 34 km long and 23 km wide.

Tight roads, easy parking, sharp handling

Fits almost anywhere: at under 3.9 m long, it slips into Broad Street spaces, Worthing side streets and busy plazas where bigger cars circle the block.

Stays flat in corners: the battery sits low in the floor, giving a lower centre of gravity than the gas Cooper S. It feels planted on winding St. Joseph and St. Thomas roads.

Home charging: small battery, big advantage

With about 28.9 kWh usable, the Mini refills quickly at home.

  • 7.4 kW wallbox: roughly 20% to 100% in about 3.5–4 hours.
  • Standard outlet: slow, but an overnight top-up can cover a typical day of commuting. A licensed electrician should check the circuit.
  • Estimated monthly energy cost: about $80–$110 BBD charging at home on BL&P rates, versus roughly $300–$450 BBD of gas for a comparable gas Cooper S. Many owners save $200+ a month.

Servicing, durability and battery life

Fewer parts usually means fewer service visits.

  • Liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery helps manage Caribbean heat.
  • No turbocharger, engine oil or spark plugs to maintain.
  • Regenerative braking can extend brake pad life.
  • Qualified local EV technicians can provide diagnostics, software checks and high-voltage safety inspections. Check the remaining manufacturer battery warranty.
